What is LED Lighting?
LED stands for light emitting diodes. In technical terms, a light-emitting diode is a semiconductor that emits light when a voltage is applied. LED can emit visible light, along with infrared lights and ultraviolet. LED lights are characterized by a low energy burn, a lengthy lifespan, an ability to adjust quickly, and their size, which is smaller than traditional bulbs. LED is an energy efficient lighting solution that offers high-grade illumination for a lower cost than customary bulbs. LED bulbs are also 80 percent more efficient than incandescent and 40 percent more efficient than compact fluorescent lighting. This can add up in especially in a commercial lighting situation.
Save Thousands on Commercial LED Lighting in WestPalm
LED lighting last much longer than traditional lighting. According to the US Department of Energy, good quality LED bulbs can last anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 hours. If you have the lights on for an average of 8 hours a day, the bulbs will last for 10 to 17 years! On average, an LED bulb can last 25,000 hours versus an incandescent bulb, which only lasts a mere 1,500 hours. Statistics like these could potentially represent savings of thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars over the lifespan of your commercial property in West Palm. A Brief History of LED Lighting
While working for Texas Instruments in 1961 on a laser diode, two men named Gary Pittman and Robert Biard accidentally invented an infrared LED. This infrared LED was invisible to the human eye so it did not have any practical uses. While working for General Electric in 1962, a man named Nick Holonyak, Jr. invented the first LED that could produce visible red light. For his efforts, Holonyak received the title of “Father of the Light-Emitting Diode.” In the early 1980’s LED technology developed into the first generation of very bright yellow, red and green LED lights. Then in the early 1990’s scientists experimented with Indium Gallium Aluminum Phosphide as the semiconductor material producing ultra-bright orange, orange-red, green, and yellow LED lights. A man named Shuji Nakamura invented the ultra-bright blue LED’s using Gallium Nitride in 1994. Shortly thereafter, high-intensity blue and green LED’s were developed using Indium Gallium Nitride. The ultra-bright blue LEDs led the groundwork for the development of cost-efficient and completely functional white LED lights that are now commonly installed in commercial buildings and manufacturing plants. Along the way, scientists figured out that by coating the blue light-emitting chip with fluorescent phosphors, the diode would emit bright white light.
